Now you can obtain your Individual Master File!

The Individual Master File is the file that contains all the information the IRS has on you. It is a magnetic tape record of all individual income tax filers, in Social Security Number sequence, and is maintained at the IRS National Computer Center. All tax data and related information pertaining to individual income taxpayers are posted to the IMF so that the file reflects a continuously updated and current record of each taxpayer's account. All settlements with taxpayers are effected through computer processing of the IMF account and the data is used for accounting records, for issuance of refund checks, bills or notices, answering inquiries, classifying returns for audit, preparing reports and other matters concerned with the processing and enforcement activities of the IRS.

Much of this file is in code form. Sections of codes that you won't recognize or mean anything to you. But, it is this information that is very important. It could state that you are a manufacturer of bus chassis or an exporter of pharmaceuticals. They could have you listed as a distributor of Alcohol or a manufacturer of fire arms. It is this tactic that the IRS uses to trick their computer into taxing you.

When you have obtained your IMF you need to be able to decode it. That is why you need 6209 chapter 8. This is what you use to decode your IMF. 6209 ch 8, gives you an overview of what is in your IMF. There is much more to it than that. There is information contained in other sources that go much farther in depth such as IRM 1100, 5200, 5300, 5400, 5480, 5600, 5700, Handbooks for Group Managers, special agents, revenue officers, Document 6209, Law Enforcement Manual III, Non Master File Manual and Tax Auditors Guides, Criminal Tax Manuals,US Attorney's Manual to name some of them.
