Here's some proof straight from the Socialist Security Administration. Social Security is Strictly Voluntary.

This is Publication No. 05-10023 entitled Social Security Numbers for Children. This is a printable brochure and probably something they hand out to new parents in the hospital.You will notice the question:

Must My Baby Have A Social Security Number Now?

No! Getting a Social Security number for your baby is strictly voluntary.

Why Should I Get A Number For My Baby?

The main reason you should get a Social Security number is to claim your baby as a dependent on your income tax return. Any child you claim as a dependent on your income tax return must have a taxpayer identification number, regardless of age.

Yes, that would be the main reason. What they don't tell you should seem obvious. Claiming a child as a dependant on the tax confessional known as a 1040 is strictly voluntary as well. If marking your child with a number for life is worth a tax deduction, that's your problem.

Are There Other Advantages?

Young children need Social Security numbers for many reasons, in addition to the tax reason.

Your child needs a number if you plan to—

open a bank account;
buy savings bonds;
get medical coverage; or
apply for some kind of government services for your child.

1) Opening a bank account, a number is not required. There are offshore options as well which require no number.
2) Savings bonds. Buying those is nowhere near a necessity of life.
3) Getting medical attention does not require a number
4) Government services always require some sort of application process. Certainly not a requirement.
