Driver’s Licenses –

I had several people remind me that there is no law requiring the average American to have a driver’s license in order to drive their own personal vehicle (non-commercial) on the roads here in the U.S.

Here is my response to that:

Regarding driver's licenses, here's the problem. if you don't have a license and you get stopped, you're going to get trouble, whether it's a warning, a ticket or an arrest. The police (sheriff, deputy etc.) know that all driver's must be licensed. They are not interested in what the law says. They are only interested in what they are told. they follow orders and they have the guns. The only way this is going to change is if we come up with some sort of mass education and inform everyone that they don't have to have a license to drive unless they are planning on driving a commericial vehicle. Then everyone has to believe it. Then everyone has to decide to do something about it. That's the only way I can see that we could effectually drive without a license. I don't see that happeing.

Like I said, they have the guns. These days the police are not our friends. The police are to be feared. and most times, rightly so. The Police are no longer here "to protect and to serve". If this were the case we could count on them to uphold our rights and not infringe upon them. If this were Mayberry and we had Andy Taylor to count on, I'm sure he would let us drive without a problem. This isn't Mayberry and I saw Andy Griffith on TV the other day and he's not looking like the spry Sheriff that took Opey fishing all the time.

The only viable option at this point is to allow people to get a license without a SSN.

I don't disagree with what you are saying, I just don't see a change coming on that issue and driving without a license is inevitably going to cause more aggravation than it is worth.

Although I love the confrontations that I have had the privelege of engaging in on the SSN front, I know that if I drove without a license it would be bad. I would more than likely get stopped at the worst time, for the stupidest thing and probably catch a police officer having a bad day and wants nothing more than to take it out on me. It wouldn't be pretty.

My main concern is my son. he has no SSN (I made sure of that). What is going to happen to him when he wants to drive?

I also was sent a couple of links showing what states currently do not require a SSN to obtain a license. This is going to change when the Real ID Act goes into effect in May of 2008.

I think much of the political correctness is going way overboard. To fight this, in the past, I would tell people, I’m being Politcally Correct here, so, Have a Lovely Holiday Season.

I’m tired of it. This year, I’m wishing everyone a Merry Christmas. If you celebrate something else, fine. Take my wishes in the spirit it is intended. I hope you have a wonderful, whatever you celebrate.
