No SSN, no US Passport

Just came across this website and thought I'd share a story because I am not seeing anything like this on the internet yet.

My son's US Passport application, is currently being held up in processing because he does not have a social security number! He was born in Mexico and his US citizenship was claimed when he was still a baby because I his mother, am a US citizen.

I was given SSN forms when I got his first passport and told to apply for him but never did because we live outside of the USA. He has only been in the USA for less than one week in his life and is only 7 yrs old! We were to visit my family in the USA, flying directly from Mexico next week. Usually US passports are processed within two weeks at my local consular agent and we submitted his applications, fulfilling all of the requirements a month ago. It has taken me a week to find all of this out while inquiring why the application has taken so long. We will have to cross via land (while we still can) to make our flight that was to connect us from the POE we are supposed to fly into from Mexico.

Thank GOD we are all dual citizens and hold passports for our country of Mexico. By the way these take citizens one day to obtain provided all the requirements are met. If my son was not a citizen of Mexico, then living here would pose a nightmare! I would have to renew a visa and he would need a US passport in order to do so...but then there's this carrot being dangled in front of me. Just get my kids SSN's and they too will be controlled by US! I was hoping to educate them and allow them to make their own decision because it is a big responsibility.

So this is a policy change announcement informing you that in order to obtain a US Passport the applicant MUST have an SSN.
