Register for college NO SSN!

(A very painless story)
In the spring semester of '2001 I proceded to register for adult continuing education class at the local community college not inserting my ssn on the application with attached blank money order, when turning my application in to the school official I came right out and asked what shall I put in this space if I have no ssn? Before I could explain he said: "none". (Tip; for common mistake I made, NEVER volunteer information unless legally obligated to. I was lucky it had not gone further.) The next day I recieved a call from registration just to confirm that I had no ssn and thanked me for supplying a copy of my birth certificate for identification. A couple days later I recieved confirmation of the class start date and a randomly computer generated student identification # in the form of a ssn to my wonderful victory. For the summer session I used the same number with no problem at all.
